Public Sculpture/Installation

Gall Pod Sculpture Installation Project, Valerie Carew and Ashley Snook, Evergreen Brick Works, 2015. An interdisciplinary fusion between pedagogy, ecological literacy and public sculpture, the Gall Pod Installation Project; single-person dwellings offer inhabitants the opportunity to experience mimicry through role play as they discover what it might be like as a gall fly larvae, protected within the stock of the goldenrod plant. These human scale, interactive and biodegradable gall forms are constructed with a hay and twine weaving technique. Once completed, the installation will remain onsite for visitors to explore and learn about a very interesting local ecological process. The installation is a response to a critical need for active participation and sensory responses to natural systems in a highly urbanized area.
