ABOUT

Valerie Carew is an interdisciplinary artist and educator. Her practice describes a personal endeavor to subvert and emerge from social and environmental severance. She develops artwork which connect bodies to land.  Carew investigates commodified representations of land and the wild- nature replacements which permeate urban life, through painting, mimetic performative role-play (wearable sculptural forms) and field research. She employs the home as a symbolic device in relation to personal identity, and a physically mediating object between the body and natural environments. She investigates areas of regeneration in southern Ontario such as fallow farmland ecosystems- traditional territories of the Algonquin, Mississaugas of the New Credit, the Haudenosaunee, the Annishnaabe and the Huron-Wendat.

She has exhibited internationally, including Napier University in Edinbugh (2018), Dances at Dances at MuCCC: Festival of Contemporary Dance in Rochester NY (2017), and F Generation: Feminism, Art, Progressions in Melbourne, Australia (2015). Recent exhibitions include: Gender and The Lens II at Ryerson Artscape (2018), Hard Twist 11 and Nuit Blanche, Fly By Night at The Gladstone Hotel (2016), and John B. Aird Gallery (2017). She is a graduate from the Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media and Design Program at OCAD University where she received two scholarships and the 2016 Outstanding Exhibition Award.

Students are introduced to avenues of conceptual making within sculptural practice, and learn ways to build visual language using textile and mixed media.

Session Leader, ITP Camp, NYU, New York   June 2017
Led skills sharing workshops dedicated to making hand crafted, wearable sculptural forms.
