The windy, spongy marshland ecosystems of Newfoundland are far more complex than they appear. These bakeapple berries remind me of my Dad’s brother Alan, who has lived off the land since childhood. As small children, Dad fell off a wharfed fishing boat. Alan, grabbed his hair from shore, and kept him from going under.
